Like watching two drunks beat the shit out of each other on a Friday night, listening to the chaotic sounds of the Atari Teenage Riot's "Burn, Berlin, Burn!" is something that never gets old.
To the uninitiated the album's huge bass lines, sampled guitar riffs, and screaming vocals might sound like nothing more than noise. We know better. This is a soundtrack to violence, pure and simple; the sonic equivalent of hitting someone in the face with a baseball bat.
ATR was a band that never got the respect it deserved. Headed by the infamous Alec Empire and Carl Crack, the band created a unique sound that, at least in my mind, was a logical evolution of the hardcore punk sounds of the early '80s. The music was political, angry, loud, and full of energy. Sure they used a lot of electronic instruments, but who says that punk is the eminent domain of "real" guitars and drums.
Alas ATR are no more. Carl Crack was found dead in his Berlin apartment in 2001 and that pretty much spelled the end of the band. Alec Empire continues to release a number of solo efforts, "Intelligence + Sacrifice" is especially worth checking out.
"Burn, Berlin, Burn" is not an album for everyone, girls for whatever reason especially seem to find it offensive. But if you like your music hard and loud then drop down $13 at your local record store.
