|What does it mean when an ultra hyped literary dynamo turns out to be a complete fabrication? It means that there are three people sitting in San Francisco surrounded by the atmosphere of their own cleverness and the smell of lots of money. Although this story is, by now, relatively old I decided to comment on it as Leroy was my first ever interview subject. Did he/she/they pull the fabricated wool over my bloodshot eyes? Not exactly as I mentioned that this whole JT bit may not exactly pass for what normal humans consider a concrete truth. Excerpt from my interview dated 3/13/2002, "It has been widely bandied about that Leroy is a creation of someone else. Some say Dennis Cooper is responsible for creating this doppelganger called Jt or the Terminator. His known photographs always feature him costumed or so obscured you can't quite draw a bead on his facial features as to make a full circle for a face. It can be understandable however that one who has been through so much, written about it, and became a media sensation in the process would want to hide from a world that knows so much about them." |
Riding a train of fools being driven by a group of deceitful wannabes certainly can sting but probably not as much as anyone who held tight the, in retrospect, bullshit stories blown out by the aforementioned trio. I would imagine that anyone who had truly experienced the childhood horrors that were detailed in "Leroys" books imagined that they could sympathize with this poor waif and perhaps use it/him/her/they/them as a measure that these problems can be overcome. Well how disappointing it must have been to be completely fucking lied to. Another punch in the gut, sock in the face, oh so sorry but I'm busy at the bank spending your "well wishing" money from someone who was never there in the first place. It seems to be not so bad though as the ghosts sycophantic celebrity coattailers will have you know. Winona Ryder was apparently aware that it was all a big metaphorical ball gag and thats ok because, well, she's rich and famous even though she may not act like it (see "shoplifting"). Asia Argento when presented with the question of, "What, if anything, in this movie is true?" Responded with the age-old playing dumb maxim of, "What is truth?" Perhaps she was swindled too seeing as that response seems like a relatively subversive way not to look like you've been played like a fucking harp.
Palm Pictures is even using the whole debacle to further line their own pockets with the debris that falls from the lie. I think it's pretty shameful to exploit very serious issues, pass them off for reality, tell everyone it's all a big joke and sit back on your conscious lacking asses and count the money made from the misery of the duped. Fuck James Frey. At least he actually exists. All "JT Leroy" did was make people believe in ghosts.
